My Compliments

I wanted to compliment the webmaster for the creative and insightful titles he provides for the Shorpy's photographs.

[The Shorpy staff thanks you! - Dave]

Marguerite S. Drury

The former Marguerite Simonds married Peter A. Drury Jr., son of a prominent Washington banker and brewer, in 1920. Baby was born July 27, 1921. They made their home at 2233 Bancroft Place N.W. Eventually there was a second child.

The marriage ended in a 1926 divorce, followed by young Peter eloping two years later with a baroness. Followed just days after that by a decree of annulment obtained in Reno (he said he was drunk at the wedding). She said they were still married and filed for divorce. Lawsuits. Lawyers. Scandal!

I would bet that the kids had some stories to tell.

Cold Weather Baby Boots

Baby Drury is wearing a pair of expensive and warm winter boots, completely quilted (probably silk satin), and trimmed and probably lined with white bunny fur. And the hourglass shaped leather soles have yet to be scuffed. The black smudge on the left white fur cuff of the baby's coat could be a stain, but is more likely an ermine tip, matched by one on the right not seen at this angle, and a classic 1920s touch of additional luxury.

Le Chapeau

I would describe her hat as "Napoleonic."
