NEW / OLD FROM THE VINTAGRAPH VAULTS >> THE FIRST THANKSGIVING

Wish You Were Here

Wish You Were Here

1956 Chrysler and owner at the Crescent View Apartments, somewhere in Florida. 35mm Ektachrome transparency. View full size. This is the sensible-looking kind of lady who ran the world when I was a little kid - growing up in Florida!

License plates

I always thought that Florida plates were on the rear only. I lived in Coral Gables for several years in the early 60s. There were no front plates when I lived there.

[Ergo the car is not from Florida. That's an Illinois license plate. - Dave]

Re: The Not-So-Greats

"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress." (Peter the Hermit, 1274)

"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise [disrespectful] and impatient of restraint" (Hesiod, 8th century BC).

Seems to me the more times change, the more things stay exactly the same!

Florida Plates

The first digit or two digits of Florida license plates of that era were a county code; 22 (on the Oldsmobile) is the code for Putnam County, of which the county seat is Palatka.

Crescent View

I grew up on Siesta Key in Florida and there is a Crescent View condo / vacation rental development there. Could possibly be the same place.

Bring back the sensible ladies!

I liked it when the world was run by the gals in comfortable shoes and no-nonsense hairstyles. It's going to heck in a handcart without them!
