About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

VINTAGRAPH • WPA • WWII • FLY TO THE CARIBBEAN BY CLIPPER, c. 1950s

Rapid Deployment Force: 1917

Rapid Deployment Force: 1917

Washington, D.C., circa 1917. "Capt. Warren W. Whiteside, 10th Cavalry." National Photo Company Collection glass negative. View full size.

Confidence. Shyness. Aloofness.

Name three things these kids are exhibiting.

I wonder

If he was any relation to Sheridan Whiteside, the famous author and lecturer.

Mixed impressions

As to the little girl on the left, her facial expression says "SNOB" but the dolly says "Little girl."

Demerits

It looks like one of Captain W. W. Whiteside's tunic buttons is undone.
