My grandparents Elsie and Charles J. Clarke behind the counter of their general store in Fort Covington, New York, a very small village located on the border of northern New York State and Canada. My grandfather, a baker by trade, was proud to own a store after emigrating to Canada on an orphan ship as a young boy from Liverpool, England. Unfortunately, they eventually lost the store during the Great Depression after allowing their friends and neighbors to buy needed staples on credit or by bartering.
