Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Saratoga Springs, New York, circa 1908. "United States Hotel and Broadway." Continuing of tour of this Upstate horse-racing and mineral-water mecca. 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
My father was born in Saratoga Springs in 1919. His mother and father were both born there. Looking at this picture and the other recent Saratoga Springs picture, I like to imagine my grandmother's aunt (of whom I have a lot of pictures) walking along the street. Her name was Emma Doolittle and she married Albert Freeman in the 1880's in this town. Saratoga Springs is still lovely, but the United States Hotel is no more. I believe it was replaced by a grocery store and parking lot. An incredible loss of history.
