A miner from California went north to British Columbia where a new gold rush was taking place in 1858. His photo is an example of a very early albumen paper print, which could have been taken in San Francisco or Victoria. The picture was cut down, removing the maker's name. Some photographic studios of the time rarely changed the furniture, carpets, and backgrounds. Looking through a thousand mid-nineteenth-century portrait photos has not turned up the studio.
