Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Jamaica, British West Indies, c. 1910. Robert Jacinto Russell (1877-1965), a blacksmith who later upgraded his skill set to repair Model T Fords, poses with wife Irene Elizabeth Russell nee Hall (1886-1960). They would celebrate 50 years of marriage in 1956. Neither ever traveled more than 100 miles from their respective places of birth. Today, their great-grandchildren can be found on at least three different continents. View full size.
