About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

I Tell You Charlie

War is hell, ain't it?

Wine time

I see they're enjoying a nice cup of wine! Can anyone enlarge the desktop to see what vintage it is? I'd also like to see what the books in the back shelf are (maps, I'd assume).

[All I could make out on the full-sized LOC tiff is part of one line which appears to read "Castiglione." - tterrace]

Camping Gear - Knot

I think I slept in that same tent and cot in Boy Scout camp this past summer! I'm somewhat surprised that the tent ropes have tension/lenthening/shortening "gadgets" rather than use of knots that slide. Then again, this was pre-Baden-Powell.
