Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

I know this image (originally posted by Dave )has been colorized before, as well as the controversy over colorizing images in the first place. However, I found this image so mesmerizing, I had to take a shot. This was my result after approx. 2 hours in Photoshop CS5. View full size.
Very nice job. The black and white pic is still there for those who don't like colorized pics. I myself like to colorize them and wonder if this is what maybe the cameraman saw at that moment. Keep up the good work! Rich
