Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

My grandpa setup store displays for Ace Hardware stores thoughout Indiana in the 50s and 60s. This is one of the stores he worked on. There is writing on the slide that says "Menaughns", possibly the name of the hardware store. View full size.

Based on the handwritten sign on the left and the name on the back wall, this is Juergen's Do-It Center in Huntington, Indiana. I'd love to have that reclining chaise lounge, even if they are notorious for finger-pinching.
