Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

This original photo was taken by my husband's Uncle Gene. We are not sure what city it was taken in, and we'd love to know, so comments are welcome! We are guessing in the 1960's or 1970's. It's my understanding that Gene was (and still is) quite a wanderer. He went to Woodstock, the Freedom March in Washington, and left home three times. The last time that he left in the mid 1980's he never returned. He's still alive, but no one in the family is quite sure of his whereabouts. Interesting! View full size.
It's College Avenue just west of Broadway in Boulder. The Google Street View is obsolete: the "University Hill Travel Center" building still appears (as an ice cream shop), but it was demolished about two years ago.
Update 2/23/13: Google Street view has been updated.
The photo was taken outside what is now Illegal Petes eatery, on College Avenue.
The building on the left reads "university hill travel center" and on the newspaper bin I could make out "Daily" and something beginning with "C" ... A bit of googling says that University Hill is a part of Boulder and the newspaper there is the Daily Camera. So that's my guess!
