Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Dulles Airport, Northern Virginia, Summer 1982. This is a McDonnell-Douglas F4-C Phantom II, the paragon of 1960s fighter-bomber aircraft. This airframe's service history is unknown. By the time of this image, it was comparatively elderly and relegated to an Air Force reserve outfit. To the right is the tail of a Lockheed C-141 Starlifter transport. To the left rear is one of the mobile lounges that gives Dulles Airport its unique charm. Printed from Kodak 110 pocket camera film. View full size.
This is the East Coast. It took longer for men's bloomer style surfer shorts and jams to work their way there from 1980 California.
I don't remember knee-high crew socks and short shorts being fashionable for guys.
Do you have a picture of it? Interesting that it would be in a show, even though they were quite old at the time. Would still be around for many years. I rode one from Hawaii to Japan in 1994.
