In the late 1960s I was responsible for marketing and press relations for Gene Zimmerman's Automobilorama in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and its collection of some 250 antique vehicles, from the beauty you see above to a limo with a toilet ("miser queen" Hetty Green's one-legged son's car). That's me on the running board with others from the marketing firm. I was bemused by the sign's explanation that Lombard, who appeared in more than 60 films, bought Gable the car "before her fatal plane crash". It wasn't until nine years later but her death was quite tragic as Google will explain, occurring at the end of a U.S. War Bond drive in 1942.
