Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Great Aunt Jennie Dickinson Pullis was born in 1843. This BW image was taken early 1900s. She's elderly and still stunning. I chose to color this image for the challenge presented by the different laces and her white (formerly blond) hair. The shawl is machine made, the other lace pieces are hand sewn. I have the brooch for reference. All repair & coloring is done with Photoshop using gradient mapping, color and adjustment layers. About 23 layers altogether. View full size.
First-class work on the colorization, and you had a beautiful woman to begin with.
