1915. Washington, D.C. "Miss Edith Gracie -- dog show." Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative. View full size.
Once again, the image was irresistible. I had to give her some color. And her little doggie too! All work is done in Photoshop. The larger version is here.
And there's a link to Señorita Lenora Rivero, diplomat's daughter and novice aviatrix last seen (here at least) on the lower wing of a 1911 aeroplane, skirts modestly tied together so they wouldn't commit an aerial indecency (https://www.shorpy.com/node/10200).
She, her younger sister Amparo, and Miss Gracie were in the society news (1911-1912) as three of six belles set to make their Washington, D.C. debuts in the winter of 1911. See the Shorpy link above for more, including a society ball.
She plays with the cat and thinks our little rat terrier is her sister. It's really cute to see the three of them curl up together for their afternoon nap. Not the slightest touch of meanness there!
In 1936, the breed was accepted by the American Kennel Club as the American Staffordshire Terrier.
Abusers of this fine animal have have learned to pervert its protective instincts into aggressive behavior. A law prohibiting dog ownership to those who have been found guilty of dog fighting would not be too severe.
Flatbush: Buster Brown's sister was named Mary Jane. Buster Brown was a newspaper comic strip before the shoe company started using him for advertising. It was created by the same guy who created The Yellow Kid, which is generally considered to be the origin of the newspaper comic strip.
Her father had died three years before. She died three years after this picture was taken, shortly after her engagement.
Rose A. was quite right...pit bulls were considered "nanny dogs". You often see pictures from the late 19th-early 20th centuries of pit bulls with small children or even with babies. Like anything else, the actions of a small number of pit bulls' owners have made the breed a concern.
Few things show, as dramatically, a change in public attitude as old photos with children and pit bulls.
Pit bulls were once seen as beloved companions of children in film and homes, now some seek to ban them. Lovers of Tige (Buster Brown's dog) and Petey (from the little Rascals) would be shocked at today's view on the breed.
She was the daughter of Titanic survivor Colonel Archibald Gracie VI.
My first impression was that Buster is looking for his dog Tige. Maybe Buster had a sister that took Tige to dog shows when he and Tige weren't selling shoes.
"I'm Buster Brown, I live in a shoe. That's my dog, Tige, he lives there too!"
What a handsome bull breed we have here!
