Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

New York. October 26, 1921. "Peggy O'Neil." The Irish-American actress at ease. 5x7 glass negative, George Grantham Bain Collection. View full size.
The woman reminds me very much of actress Eileen Brennan:

Had a relative that had eyes like that including the circles under them. She drank a little and smoked a lot. Everyone liked to spend time with her because of her humor and so many people skills.
That Peggy's at ease, I'm not with that creepy doll next to her.
That is two of the scariest pairs of eyes I've seen in a long time!
