Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

You can see a calliope in the background, as well. I have suitcases of pictures- unfortunately, some are not in good condition, but it's a lot to go through :).
Based on her fingers-in-ears stance, I suppose the Joey was milliseconds from getting a faceful of soot as the Auguste squeezed the bulb of his exploding camera in reaction to being swatted on the keister by the Midget.
