My paternal grandparents, Harvey and Grace Duryée, made a trip around the Southwestern US in 1930. They moved to California from New York in the late 1800's and settled in Los Angeles. Harvey had been in real estate, and this trip took place after he was retired.

Old Oraibi, located in Northeastern Arizona, was settled before 1100 AD, so it's one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America.

The current residents of Old Oraibi allow visitors but do not allow photography, so there are no pictures available of what the settlement looks like today. My favorite part of the photo is the woman standing in the doorway just peeking around the corner, presumably at my grandmother who took the picture. The caption "Old Oraibi - Hopi Indian Reservation, 1930" is written on the back of the photo in pencil in Grace's hand. View full size.
