Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Yow! It wasn't till I embigulated the image that I noticed the two older women behind the screen door. Here I was, settling into a true appreciation of the low heels, the stance (bent knee and cocked hip), the smoking hand, when suddenly the ladies indoors came into view. As though that wasn't shock enough, I then realized the kids had caught me staring at their mom.
