Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Jan. 27, 1947. "Kartch's, Main Street, Paterson, New Jersey. General interior, to entrance." Large-format negative by Samuel H. Gottscho. View full size.
Anybody notice the automobile in the photo?
Paterson, NJ. Google Street View it, if you dare. Now it is known as BARGAIN/Today's Fashion for Men. Safe to say the interior has probably changed.

This place definitely reminds me of Richman Brothers as late as the 70s or 80s.
Love the raised display cabinets (almost to the ceiling) on the right, complete with glass fronts. It actually reminds me more of my perceived image of 1957 instead of 1947. You can tell this was the height of modern post-war shopping elegance, even in Paterson.
So I guess Kartch's was just ahead of its time.
Probably didn't shop here.
