Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

The Metropolitan Opera contralto Louise Homer with husband Sidney and their brood circa 1919, sunnier but moldier than when we last saw them. 5x7 glass negative, George Grantham Bain Collection. View full size.
As someone pointed out on the previous photo, there isn't a hand-me-down in sight, but at least mom and son aren't afraid to wear the same outfit they did before. This may indicate that back in the day, even among the well to do, there wasn't a closet full of clothes to wear. Glad to see everyone is smiling now!
[Um, it's the "same outfit" because both pictures were taken at the same time. - Dave]
