About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Ten-Foot Pool: 1936

Ten-Foot Pool: 1936

Washington. D.C. "Swimmers, Y.W.C.A. pool -- March 11, 1936." An interesting mix of tan lines. Harris & Ewing glass negative. View full size.

Shoes were murder back then, and nice boys didn't pay attention to girls' feet!

Laugh Line

The joke started on the left but never quite made it all the way to the right side.

Along the window sills, a nice touch. I'd imagine the plants loved the location.

I'm not a podiatrist

or a chiropodist, but I think I see some serious bunions and a variety of misshapen foot structures here.
