About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Levity Longevity

I wonder if she could have imagined then that more than 60 years later she'd still be packing them in (and rolling them in the aisles)?

A national treasure

A number of today's 'actresses' could learn an awful lot about skill and professionalism from this amazing woman.

I can only hope

I want to be Betty when I grow up.

Pretty girls tag is right. Nuf said, nudge nudge wink wink.
