Bill Mitchell: 1923

My wife's grandfather, John William Hicks Mitchell, a delivery man for Austin's Grocery in Northfork, McDowell County, West Virginia, in 1923. He moved to Northfork from Elk Creek, Virginia in hopes of finding work. Prior to the store owner's purchase of this truck, Bill delivered groceries by horse and wagon. "Bill" Mitchell was 20 years old in this picture; the young boy shown with him is unknown to our family. I was fortunate to have known Bill well for many years, after marrying his granddaughter in 1985. Bill passed away just shy of his 90th birthday in 1993. View full size.
