About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

VINTAGRAPH • WPA • WWII • EAT MORE FISH, 1917

Performing Artsy: 1920

Performing Artsy: 1920

Circa 1920. "Marion Morgan Dancers." Nitrate negative by Arnold Genthe, specialist in the gauzily draped (and undraped) subject. View full size.

The breast dancers for the part

That must have been an interesting audition process, finding two girls whose assets so closely resembled each other's!

Good grief

Did the women in 1920 have no morals like we do now?

Just kidding of course.

Remember, Ladies

On your toes, always on your toes.

Shocking

Risque for the times. Love the photo.

What??

Hey that's naughty!! (But I'm not complaining)
