Circa 1906. "The bathing beach at Magnolia, Massachusetts." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
You can almost smell the wet wool across more than a century.
The boys get to show bare arms and legs and wear two-piece suits that aren't a lot more than a tank top and long shorts. The girls wear stockings and dresses over wool undergarments. I bet those girls were envious, and in less than twenty years, they were showing a lot more skin (or at least their daughters were).
I did an ultra-zoom on the original mega-tiff, and it's just a white border to her bathing costume.
