Wouldn't it be cool to go back in time to when this picture was taken, then tell Babe Ruth, "One of these days, a guy named Alex Rodriguez will sign a 10-year, $252 million contract to play baseball. Wait, wait, it gets better. After he signs it, he'll walk out on the final three years."

I imagine Babe would be even more dyspeptic after hearing that.

I'm struck by the differences in the uniforms worn by the four in this photo. Notice the different jersey styles sported by Carrigan and Barry, as well as the hats. Gainer's uniform appears to be a road gray. (The Babe appears a bit dyspeptic, but that can probably be chalked up to one too many pre-game hot dogs, eh?)

Carrigan was the player/manager, but didn't really play. Barry played second base, and Gainer played first, but not too often. Ruth had a great year, going 23-12 with a 1.75 ERA in 323 innings, his best season as a pitcher. The Red Sox won the World Series that year, 4-1 over Brooklyn.
