Brown Bear, Brown Bear...

After Grandpa finishes reading the paper, it looks like he'll be tackling "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" Its back cover can be seen peeking out just behind the little boy's head.

Mayberry

Two different stories, Durocher and the Astros, then the Royals over the Yankees, with John Mayberry hitting the 3-run homer for KC. He had actually been traded the previous summer by the Astros, after they'd tried to alter his natural hitting style. Allowed by the Royals to return to his natural style (slugging first baseman batting left), he was able once again to be (in his own words) a "long ball hitter." But look at the way that cute kid is absent-mindedly grabbing his foot while pointing something out to Grandpa!

Nice guys finish last

That Sunday paper would be referring to the events of Saturday, August 26, 1972: the surprise return to management by Leo Durocher, replacing Harry Walker, and the Royals beating the Yankees 6-3, with five unearned runs in the third inning including a three-run homer by John Mayberry. Great shot of grandfather with the little boy!

Possibly '72 instead?

Going by the sports page lying on the floor, Leo Durocher became the Astros manager in 1972 and managed the final 31 games for them that season.
