"Downtown" Honey Grove, Pennsylvania shivers on a snowy day, pre-1952. My grandfather's grocery was apparently getting a delivery. View full size.
On the right side of the photo are telephone wires on glass insulators. I would bet that many of these phones were party lines, and that somewhere nearby they ended up at a manual switchboard where a lady named Ernestine said, "Number Please". The present day view by 510Russ shows modern telephone cables on wood poles in the same locations as the original ones.
Guessing based on the license plates on the truck it would be an even year winter. The plate color alternated between blue with yellow lettering (even years) and yellow with blue lettering (odd). which would make it winter of 1948-1949 or 1950-51.
All the charm of an unassuming landscape!
I grew up on Breyers, or was it Sealtest? it was a long time ago, cones cost 15 cents.
Too bad that the big red barn is gone. I also see that the post office has moved across the road.
