The Bay Area in 1923. "Plate 7. Jewett touring car on mountain road." 6½ x 8½ inch glass negative, originally from the Wyland Stanley collection. View full size.
From our Aunt Mary's photo album, circa 1913. A friend of Aunt Mary's gazes down at the Russian River. Note this road is paved with wood. The only other photo in this series is of reflections in the river. Could be any part of the river.
[And to this day some sections of River Road consist of similar viaducts, albeit of reinforced concrete, abutting particularly steep inclines. -tterrace]
I drove along a 40 mile stretch of road very much like this on the way to Bodega Bay. The difference being that my road had no guardrail, was paved and was collapsing at various points along the way. It was too narrow for two cars at times and too narrow everywhere to make a U-turn. I was so happy to come out of the other end after more than an hour of creeping along.
Truth is, I remember when that road was still dirt. If that indeed is River Road.
There are two spots on the lower river where I think this shot could have been taken. My first thought was across from Casini Ranch near Duncans Mills, and the other across from Odd Fellows Park near Korbel Winery.
I once took a drive from Mt. Shasta to the coast along a road very much like this. I don't think it had the railing, so perhaps not, but fond memory nonetheless!
Somewhere along the Russian River between Forestville and Jenner.
