Miss Maude and Her Class: c.1930

Miss Maude McMahon was a teacher at an elementary school in Fairland, Indiana. This was around 1930. Obviously a rural school, (see the bare feet) and they didn't care too much about limiting class size. After leaving teaching she eventually became the town librarian for Brownstown, Indiana for many, many years. Not many smiles. View full size.

What is that kid wearing?

I was drawn to the boy in the 4th row, second from the right. At first I thought he was wearing some type of burlap. After enlarging though it seems he is wearing something stranger than burlap. Love that expression on the teacher, must have been a tough class.
