This was taken during the San Diego Harbor cruise in July, 1966. Can anyone identify the carrier? It's got those big deck guns, which makes me think it's World War II vintage. Photo by my dad. View full size.
Here is another photo of me and the same carrier. Any help in I.D.'ing this vessel? I'm pretty sure it was the Bunker Hill.
@JayBee: The Ticonderoga had a hurricane (enclosed) bow, whereas the Bunker Hill did not, nor did CV-17 receive the angled flight deck retrofit.
The horizontal white placard on the starboard side, lower deck, midway between the bow and first starboard radar domes seems to have the correct number of letters to spell out Bunker Hill. Also, the right-most letters seem to be two letter "L".
Hard to say for sure, because it's too pixelated when I zoom in on it, but looks about right to be "Bunker Hill".
It may very well be the Bunker Hill. If that is not verified then consider that the Ticonderoga came in for a refit in late 66. I was one of the design engineers who spent a couple of weeks crawling over her(Ti) for her re-design on the air conditioning systems. We completed our design work around October/November 1967
Heavily damaged in World War II, CV-17 ended its days in San Diego as a stationary electronics test bed.
