Senior Class: 1888

"Tower Hill School - Senior Grade - 1888" The paper backing in the frame had an NRA (National Recovery Act) stamp from 1933 on it issued by the "Picture Moulding and Picture Frame Code Authority" so it's probably been in the frame since then or shortly after. View full size.

The Long Thin Whatsit

Four people in this photo have some kind of wand.
Two women have put it diagonally through the buttons of their jackets.

Two more, in the center of the second row, are holding these things in their hands.

It isn't a pencil. It is too long and has two ends. What the heck is it?

[They're pencils. Which, then as now, have two ends. - Dave]

Nellie Higginbotham

The Shorpy name jumped right out at me. Second row, third from the left. She is looking off to the side, as at least three others are doing.

Tower Hill Township

I believe this school would have been in Tower Hill Township in Illinois. Captolia Evey shows up as one of the children of John Evey. "Captolia follows the profession of teaching."
