About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Shafter Strikers: 1938

November 1938. Shafter, California. "During the cotton strike, the father, a striking picker, has left his wife and child in the car while he applies to the Farm Security Administration for an emergency food grant." Medium format negative by Dorothea Lange for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.

Sporty Coupe

The car is, indeed, a sport coupe but it is not the rumble seat that differentiates it from the more pedestrian offerings from FoMoCo. It is the soft, non-folding, top. Buyers with a few more dollars to spend could have spiffed it up with, non-functional, landau irons. BTW, rumble seats were available on all Model A coupes and roadsters, whether standard or deluxe versions

And the Car Is ...

A 1928 Model A Ford Coupe, probably a Sport Coupe since it has a rumble seat (see step-on fender).
