A Stop at Ellenville

Ellenville, New York. From a batch of negatives I bought recently. From what I can tell there is no rail service in the town anymore. View full size.

The "Old Woman"

Ellenville, NY was an important station on the Kingston-Summitville, NY. branch of the New York, Ontario & Western Ry. The O&W was known as the "Old Woman" and, especially in later years, as the "Old and Weary".
The railroad was closed by the US for nonpayment of Railroad Retirement taxes after twenty years of bankruptcy in 1957, and most of its 500+ miles of track was removed, the largest railroad abandonment in US history at the time. Probably the longest stretch of ex-O&W line still in use today is the rapidly fading segment from Fulton to Oswego, NY.[by CSX]
For any interested, the O&W has a very active historical group, the Ontario and Western Railway Historical Society. They should be easy to find via Bing or Google.
