So real, so simple

I absolutely love this picture and this little moment in time captured on film. It could not be more natural or genuine, the warm affection among kin, a few seconds of shared laughter from both hard-working homemakers, the approving touch on the shoulder from one to the other. Both are wearing unpretentious country gingham fabric, one on her apron, the other on her blouse, home-sewn clothing, the modest sunhat, the tin pail of perhaps fresh churned butter or cream, the plume of decorative flora being brought inside, perhaps to display in a milk bottle vase, and the smattering of wild flowers, maybe daisies, sprouting randomly around them. The upside-down umbrella may mean the early morning rain has stopped and the typical old schoolhouse in the background adds yet another layer of inspiration. I just have to reiterate, I LOVE this picture.

P. S. Maybe it should be colorized by one of Shorpy's experts.
