Powder Puff Derby

The number "61" on the vertical stabilizer probably means that these two women participated as a team in the "Powder Puff Derby," a transcontinental air race for women that was sponsored by the 99s, a women's pilot organization. It is still held today but it is now called the "Air Race Classic".

In 1970 the race started in Monterey, California, and ended in Bristol, Pennsylvania, in early July of 1970. If the date is accurate this photo was probably taken after they returned to California. The race is typically held in late June each year.

If someone has a program from this 1970 race we could probably identify the two women who flew as Team 61.
