A Man in Uniform and His Gal

When I found the pages of this photo album at a second-hand store in Lancaster, California, I was first attracted to the art deco styled 1930's car in the background with the authenticity of its black wall tires, muddy fenders, and battered hubcap. But when I got the pages home and began scanning them, I discovered there were four pictures of this same couple in which she was dressed differently and he was always in uniform. Was he showing off his gal or was she showing off her guy in uniform? I have no way to know. All of the evidence on those pages suggests this was a pre-Pearl Harbor enlistment; the photos appear to date to 1940.
An I Love Lucy-esque long trailer serves as the backdrop for the second look at the guy and his gal.
A third look at them finds him in a dress uniform and the couple standing next to an otherwise boring house with what might be canna planted in its garden.
The last of the photos in the series was from some kind of extended family gathering because there are numerous other groups of people in the album posed in this same spot. But once again the pair is posed together, suggesting they were husband and wife. View full size.
