The Niagara River circa 1901. "International (Upper Steel Arch) Bridge from below at Niagara Falls." At the landing: The steamboat Maid of the Mist, "nymph of the mighty cataract." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative. View full size.
1901 was the year Annie Taylor became the first person to survive the Horseshoe Falls in a Barrel. It was ten years before a man duplicated the feat.
The bridge collapsed as ice buildup in the river pushed it off its abutments. Replaced shortly afterward with the Rainbow Bridge.
Cool view of the ice destroying the bridge!
I wonder if this Erector Set is still there.
Very interesting structural entrance design.
[The bridge collapsed in 1938. The traffic was faster than walking pace -- note the double overhead power supply for trolley cars. - Dave]
