They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

I've been sitting here looking at this beautiful little girl. Had she been born a few decades later, she might have been a model or actress; an internationally known beauty. I think we can make a few generalizations about what her life might have been like. She would have been in her late 30s by the time the Jim Crow laws came to an end. Maybe her children would, at least, have been able to have opportunities that she never had. I hope so.
