Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

This picture makes me sad. Dogs are supposed to be beside their loving and indulgent owners, not on string ropes at the pound with strangers.
The silver lining is that these men genuinely look like they love dogs...and this picture will forever be "Shorpy neighbors" with the picture of the sailors and their pet birds!
