About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

The Road: 1935

The Road: 1935

October 1935. "Road to Nicholson Hollow. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia." View full size. Medium format nitrate negative by Arthur Rothstein for the FSA.

The road less traveled

Sort of looks like the old logging trails near my cabin. In the spring they turn into streams and all the sand gets washed out leaving only rocks.

Makes for some seriously bumpy trails!

Native Guide

With apologies to Daniel Decatur Emmett

... but perhaps Richmond isn't the only hard road to travel (in Virginia)
