Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

6 p.m., April 16, 1909. Anthony, Rhode Island. "Two boys working in Coventry Company Mill. I saw about 10 boys and girls who looked to be under 14 years of age." View full size. Photo and caption by Lewis Wickes Hine.
If it were 100 years ago, these boys would be neighbors of mine. I live within walking distance of the Anthony Mill.
The Anthony Mill today:

I'm so spoiled I cannot imagine living the hard life kids from poor families did back then. These kids skipped most of their childhoods! Not much schooling, just working at a young age. They grew up fast!
I also noticed that the one boy's shoe has the sole tied to the rest of the shoe!! Sad!!!
I am obsessed with this site! I LOVE old photos and I LOVE history, so this is the perfect site for me. Great job - Thank you!!!
Does the boy on the left have his right shoe taped up? When magnifying the image, I lose clarity so I'm not sure. What a hard life those children must have had. This is my first comment as I have just recently discovered this magnificent site. I'm not sure who to thank for the Shorpy site but I certainly thank all posters and commentators.
