Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.
This picture is hardly 100 years ago. Looks more like 1940 vintage: that's when two-piece bathing suits first started to be worn, and the espadrilles (shoes) were popular then as well.
Notice the kitty lapping at the plate, the open legs, bit of crotch showing, the choice of shoes - tied up on one side, unbound on the other, a shoeless foot. Very sexy.
It's oddly alluring, and I can't help but feel ashamed for being aroused by it!
