Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

My Grandpa worked on His Majesty's Indian Service - before India became independent and fought in World War II in Malta, Italy - when he was barely 18. This photo was taken when he was fresh in the navy - when he was 16/17.
After independence, he continued with the Indian Navy - when he was diagnosed with kidney malfunctions (kidney transplants were unheard of at that time) and started working in an Indian company when, eventually, he died of kidney failure.
