About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Family Outing: 1918

New York, July 22, 1918. "B.V.D. Valentine." The family at an American Red Cross event. George Grantham Bain Collection glass negative. View full size.

Mr. Valentine

I've always enjoyed a juvenile 'heh' whenever coming upon any reference to the famous business tycoon, Armand Hammer. But now I have a second source of whimsy with BVD Valentine. The image provoked is amusing, yet all too ... brief.

Wonder if B.V.D.V. wore BVDs, whose slogan was "Next to myself I like BVD best"?
