About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Most were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

They should have

included this picture on that Voyager spacecraft that had all the messages and images from Earth for the benefit of some civilization that might find it on the other side of the galaxy. They would never want to mess with us after seeing this photo. Especialy that girl standing in the rear center behind the "featured" dancer.

Enchanting

It's sort of like "Dance of the Doilies."

Amazing.

This is the best photograph of Mary Todd Lincoln I have ever seen.
