About the Photos

Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

My knickers

They stayed in style a long time. I remember my mother getting me a pair in 1940. Itched myself to death from the coarse-weave tweed. Hated them.

I wonder if somebody (like me) 92 years from now will look at a picture from 2008 and see prices of lunch and laugh at how cheap it seemed to be? "Ha, ha, they paid $4 for a sandwich in 2008!"
