One of a series of images taken in Europe in 1904 by an unknown photographer. Scanned from the nitrocellulose negative. View full size.
I love these little boys. In the first half of the 20th century America was mesmerized with dutch images. Drawings of little boys in their balloon pants, little girls with their full skirts, aprons and starched white hats with wings. All wearing wooden clogs. Sometimes there would be a Dutch lady, who usually carried a switch or broom. I don't know what started it all, but the designs were embroidered on napkins, tea towels, and other cloth items used around the household.
Anyway having grown up with the drawings, it is neat to see a photo and find out they really dressed this way.
