Togetherness

My fav candid shot of Grandma & Grandpa Hughes, taken at Silver Lake, Wisconsin, 1942. Not quite sure what they're doing (is he feeding her something or lighting her cigarette maybe?). They're not around anymore to say & daddy doesn't remember either (he was only 5 when this was taken). Any guesses out there? Thanx!

Lighting up

You've guessed it... Grandpa is lighting Grandma's cigarette by holding the glowing end of his cigarette to the (so far) unlit end of Grandma's. She will then draw on her cigarette and, hey presto, it's lit. It was a standard method of lighting up outdoors when the wind would easily blow a match out.
Oh happy days when we all thought it was safe, and very pleasant, to smoke.
